overview of Berlin, Germany's capital city. By reading through it first and working with the Berlin inner city
map located at the front of Deutsch Aktuell 1 (pp xiii-viv) you will learn:

(2) what are some of Berlin's most famous and interesting sights
(3) German words/names for most of the facts/sights mentioned

Indefinite articles [ein, einen, eine, and ein] associate with nouns just like der, die and das
but do not specifically identify the noun. So, they are indefinite. Indefinite
articles describe a noun generally, not specifically. But they match ther noun in GENDER
[masculine/der, feminine/die, neuter/das] and in CASE [nominative/subject,
accusative/direct object, etc.]
Here are their forms by GENDER and CASE:

1. Der, Die, Das of Kapitel 4 Nouns (School, School- related items, School Subjects
2. Wer?, Wen?, and Was?
- You will have to change statements into questions asking the questions with
Wer?, Wen?, and Was? based on italicized words in the statements.
The ilalicized word should cause you to ask Wer?, Wen? or Was?
-Remember Wer? (Who=Subject= der,die,das,die) Wen? (Whom? = Direct Object = den, die, das,die)
- Both Wer? and Wen? are asking only about persons. (Examples. Wer ist dein Freund? (Subject)
Wen kennst du gut?
(Direct object) (Whom do you know well?)
- Was? can be either asking about subject or direct object and is only asking about a thing or an action
(eg. Was macht sie?, Was spielen sie? Was hast du heute in der Schule? Was ist um die Ecke?)
3. Based on the Lesestück on pages 108-109 you will have to match sentence parts together to make 12
complete statements that are facts based on the Lesestück (reading selection) ,,Schon früh in die Schule".
4. You will complete a dialog about school with 10 missing vocabulary words from a list. Here are some words to

Übung 4 - Each of the 10 sentences needs completion with one verb from the list below.
Each of these verbs are REGULAR and 'transitive' verbs, meaning:
(1) they form the PAST PARTICIPLE [mostly] with 'ge' as a prefix +
the er/sie/es form of the verb [Example: dauern, gedauert].
An exception will be 'besuchen' because 'be' is an inseparable
prefix [PARTICIPLE = 'besucht']
(2) they HAVE a DIRECT OBJECT and therefore each one will use 'HABEN' as its
AUXILIARY [helping] verb.
VERBS: besuchen, dauern, hören, jubeln, kaufen, regnen, schaffen [to do, make, accomplish,
succeed], schicken, schmecken, spülen
Übung 5 - Do the same as for Übung 4 except the helping verb is already given.
NOTICE that the HELPING VERB for 'WANDERN' is 'SEIN' ['wandern' is
INTRANSITIVE - It can have NO DIRECT OBJECT. It will be the same for
other verbs of motion [change of position][fahren, reisen, kommen,
gehen, laufen, schwimmen, fliegen] and the verbs showing change of
condition [wachsen, werden, sterben (to die)], and verbs of rest [bleiben, sein]
REMEMEMBER: The er/sie/es forms for 'regnen' and 'warten' are regnet and wartet.
The 'e' is still needed between the stem and the ending for the participle.
Übung 6 - You are guided to tell how a birthday party has been ['wie die Geburtstags gewesen ist'].
The phrase 'Die Geburtstagsparty ist gewesen...' = 'The birthday party has been...' [or 'was']
The PAST PARTICIPLE of the verb 'SEIN' is 'gewesen'. The HELPING VERB will be the correct
form of 'SEIN'.

Einige Hilfsweise [Some helps]:
Übung 1 - Name the ten modes of transportation pictured. Write each with its
definite article AND its correct PLURAL FORM.
Below are eleven nounseach with their definite article before the word.
The method to form its plural follows the comma. The letters following
the comma are added to the end of the word. If there are no letters then
nothing is added to the end but the article still changes to "die".
If an umlaut [ ¨ ] appears above the dash [-] it indicates the main
vowel in one syllable nouns or the main vowel in the last word of a
compound noun should receive it for a vowel sound change in the
plural form of the noun.
Remember that all definite articles become "die" in nominative [subject]
case plurals.
In this list two nouns can be used for one of the pictures. The other nine
are each used once:
das Auto,-s das Boot,-e der Bus,-se das Fahrrad,-¨er das Flugzeug,-e
das Moped,-s das Motorrad, -¨er der Motorroller,- das Schiff, -e
die Straßenbahn,-en der Zug,
Übung 3 - Use the correct form of each verb listed to complete the 12 sentences, Each
verb is used once.
2. SPRACHE [DA1 pp 334-335] In spoken German the PRESENT PERFECT TENSE
[das Perfekt] is used most often to express what has occured in the past. It is also
therefore called the CONVERSATIONAL PAST TENSE. To form the present perfect
tense two verbs are used - (1) an auxiliary verb, or helping verb, which is either "haben"
or "sein" conjugated as normal for the subject of the sentence, and used in coordination
with (2) the main verb in its PAST PARTICIPLE form. "Haben" or "Sein" will occur in the
sentence or question in its usual second or first [in yes/no questions] position. The past
participle will be at the end of the sentence [or clause in multiple clause sentences].
Here are example sentences using the verb "sagen" (to say) which needs 'haben' as
the auxiliary verb:
Er hat es gesagt. [He has said it.] Sie hat es gesagt . [She has said it.] Ich habe es gesagt.
[I have said it.]
The past participle of "sagen" is formed by adding a prefix 'ge' to the er/sie/es form of
'sagen' which is 'sagt'. So, 'ge' +'sagt' becomes 'gesagt'. This is the general way that the
past participles are formed for the category of verbs we call "regular" or "weak" verbs.
"Sagen" is an example of how most "regular'/"weak" verbs form the past participle.
A list of the REGULAR (WEAK) VERBS we have used in DA1 thus far is on PAGE 335 in DA1.

the use of HABEN and SEIN as the AUXILIARY [HELPING] VERB in PRESENT

The use of 'sein' as the auxiliary [helping] verb occurs mostly with some of the irregular
[strong] verbs. The verbs 'reisen' and 'wandern' are WEAK/REGULAR VERBS which
require SEIN as their HELPING VERB.

Each of these verbs are REGULAR and 'transitive' verbs, meaning:
(1) they form the PAST PARTICIPLE [mostly] with 'ge' as a prefix +
the er/sie/es form of the verb [Example: dauern, gedauert].
An exception will be 'besuchen' because 'be' is an inseparable
prefix [PARTICIPLE = 'besucht']
(2) they HAVE a DIRECT OBJECT and therefore each one will use 'HABEN' as its
AUXILIARY [helping] verb.
VERBS: besuchen, dauern, hören, jubeln, kaufen, regnen, schaffen [to do, make, accomplish,
succeed], schicken, schmecken, spülen
Übung 5 - Do the same as for Übung 4 except the helping verb is already given.
NOTICE that the HELPING VERB for 'WANDERN' is 'SEIN' ['wandern' is
INTRANSITIVE - It can have NO DIRECT OBJECT. It will be the same for
other verbs of motion [change of position][fahren, reisen, kommen,
gehen, laufen, schwimmen, fliegen] and the verbs showing change of
condition [wachsen, werden, sterben (to die)], and verbs of rest [bleiben, sein]
REMEMEMBER: The er/sie/es forms for 'regnen' and 'warten' are regnet and wartet.
The 'e' is still needed between the stem and the ending for the participle.
Übung 6 - You are guided to tell how a birthday party has been ['wie die Geburtstags gewesen ist'].
The phrase 'Die Geburtstagsparty ist gewesen...' = 'The birthday party has been...' [or 'was']
The PAST PARTICIPLE of the verb 'SEIN' is 'gewesen'. The HELPING VERB will be the correct
form of 'SEIN'.

Einige Hilfsweise [Some helps]:
Übung 1 - Name the ten modes of transportation pictured. Write each with its
definite article AND its correct PLURAL FORM.
Below are eleven nounseach with their definite article before the word.
The method to form its plural follows the comma. The letters following
the comma are added to the end of the word. If there are no letters then
nothing is added to the end but the article still changes to "die".
If an umlaut [ ¨ ] appears above the dash [-] it indicates the main
vowel in one syllable nouns or the main vowel in the last word of a
compound noun should receive it for a vowel sound change in the
plural form of the noun.
Remember that all definite articles become "die" in nominative [subject]
case plurals.
In this list two nouns can be used for one of the pictures. The other nine
are each used once:
das Auto,-s das Boot,-e der Bus,-se das Fahrrad,-¨er das Flugzeug,-e
das Moped,-s das Motorrad, -¨er der Motorroller,- das Schiff, -e

Übung 3 - Use the correct form of each verb listed to complete the 12 sentences, Each
verb is used once.
2. SPRACHE [DA1 pp 334-335] In spoken German the PRESENT PERFECT TENSE
[das Perfekt] is used most often to express what has occured in the past. It is also
therefore called the CONVERSATIONAL PAST TENSE. To form the present perfect
tense two verbs are used - (1) an auxiliary verb, or helping verb, which is either "haben"
or "sein" conjugated as normal for the subject of the sentence, and used in coordination
with (2) the main verb in its PAST PARTICIPLE form. "Haben" or "Sein" will occur in the
sentence or question in its usual second or first [in yes/no questions] position. The past
participle will be at the end of the sentence [or clause in multiple clause sentences].
Here are example sentences using the verb "sagen" (to say) which needs 'haben' as
the auxiliary verb:
Er hat es gesagt. [He has said it.] Sie hat es gesagt . [She has said it.] Ich habe es gesagt.
[I have said it.]
The past participle of "sagen" is formed by adding a prefix 'ge' to the er/sie/es form of
'sagen' which is 'sagt'. So, 'ge' +'sagt' becomes 'gesagt'. This is the general way that the
past participles are formed for the category of verbs we call "regular" or "weak" verbs.
"Sagen" is an example of how most "regular'/"weak" verbs form the past participle.
A list of the REGULAR (WEAK) VERBS we have used in DA1 thus far is on PAGE 335 in DA1.

[strong] verbs. The verbs 'reisen' and 'wandern' are WEAK/REGULAR VERBS which

working with "strong" verbs in the past tense. "Strong" means there will be
a vowel change in the past tense form. There are 7 (seven) vowel change
patterns which you will see:

wir, ihr, sie (plural) and for Sie just like with the weak verbs
[Example: ich/er/sie/es begann du begannst wir/sie/Sie begannen ihr begannt ]
- Read and study the introduction to the Study Guide and the example with
the the verb "sehen", p.55.
- Complete Exercises 1,2,3 on pp 58-59 of the Study Guide using the
verb list on pp 55-58 as your guide showing the necessary vowel
changes..

Tense) - Irregular Verbs, pp 78-79. The table of verbs from your
textbook shows you the principle parts of a verb: INFINITIVE, PAST, and
PAST PARTICIPLE. This list, like your Study Guide, focuses on vowel
changing verbs in the past tense, but also gives you the PAST
PARTICIPLE used in present perfect tense. It also includes the irregular
verb HABEN, which forms the past tense like the weak verbs, using the
"te" added to the stem after dropping the "b" from the stem.
- Read the introduction and explanation carefully on p 78 and study the use
of the examples with the verbs "kommen", "gehen" and "fahren" in the
past tense.

a vowel change in the past tense form. There are 7 (seven) vowel change
patterns which you will see:
i and ie changing to a [beginnen - begann] [liegen - lag]
ie and ü changing to o [fliegen - flog] [lügen (to tell a lie) - log]
ei changing to i or ie [bleiben - blieb
e changing to a [geben - gab
a changing to u [fahren - fuhr] [tragen - trug]
a, ä, u, e changing to ie or i [fallen - fiel] [gehen - ging] [hängen - hing] [laufen - lief]
o, u changing to a [bekommen - bekam] [kommen - kam] [tun (to do) - tat]
The Study-Guide lists a number of verbs under each category and gives the
past tense form of each verb in its form for ich, er, sie, and es.Remember, the form
for ich, er, sie, and es are all the same just like with the weak verbs in past
tense. But, the endings need to be put onto the stem for the forms for du,
wir, ihr, sie (plural) and for Sie just like with the weak verbs
[Example: ich/er/sie/es begann du begannst wir/sie/Sie begannen ihr begannt ]
- Read and study the introduction to the Study Guide and the example with
the the verb "sehen", p.55.
- Complete Exercises 1,2,3 on pp 58-59 of the Study Guide using the
verb list on pp 55-58 as your guide showing the necessary vowel
changes..
Freitag 27.03 1. Deutsch Aktuell 2 "SPRACHE" PAST TENSE (Narrative Past
Tense) - Irregular Verbs, pp 78-79. The table of verbs from your
textbook shows you the principle parts of a verb: INFINITIVE, PAST, and
PAST PARTICIPLE. This list, like your Study Guide, focuses on vowel
changing verbs in the past tense, but also gives you the PAST
PARTICIPLE used in present perfect tense. It also includes the irregular
verb HABEN, which forms the past tense like the weak verbs, using the
"te" added to the stem after dropping the "b" from the stem.
- Read the introduction and explanation carefully on p 78 and study the use
of the examples with the verbs "kommen", "gehen" and "fahren" in the
past tense.

- Review Present Perfect Tense of Regular Verbs: The Present Perfect Tense is used more frequently in German conversation than in English. It is often called the “converstional past”
-Wir sind mit dem Zug gereist.
The forms “gekauft” and “gereist” are called the past participle, which in German is placed at the end of the sentence.
PAST PARTICIPLE (Regular Verbs):

NOTE that the present perfect tense of reisen (gereist) and wandern (gewandert) take the form of sein (ich bin gereist/gewndert). The past participle of verbs with inseparable prefixies (like be-) is simply the er, sie es form of the present tense. This is also true of verbs ending in –ieren.

- Review the Present Perfect Tense of Irregular Verbs: The Irregular verbs do not follow the same pattern when forming the past participle as the regular verbs. Some of these verbs use sein instead of haben. Therefore, you must learn each past participle individually.
-Sie ist nach hause gefahren.
NOTE: verbs that use a form of sein must both (A) indicate motion or change of condition and (B) be intransisstive, verbs that cannot have a direct object. This is true in cases like gehen, laufen, fliegen, kommen, fahren, schwimmen,….
